"These go to eleven" hundred that is... 12/16/2009

12/14/2009 Monday

I stayed home with Will today to take it easy and make sure things were on the right track. We slept in ☺ and had a good morning. While changing his diaper I did notice that his back (the area where they did the bone marrow biopsy draw) was getting a little pink. It’s a little creepy to think about, but they literally puncture the skin and bone so there is a true hole back there. We have been instructed to keep a close eye on it. (Also he has gotten poop on it at times so that can’t be good!)

I felt concerned so I paged one of our doctors and she decided that I should take him in to the Hematology office. They decided that his back looked good, and they would give him a prescription cream to put on it.

They also decided that they wanted to do a chest x-ray (as they are still monitoring his lungs…he has had a cough, wheezing, and rattly chest throughout all of this). They decided that his lungs are still ok, but want to continue monitoring.

They drew some blood today and I have to praise the lab ladies! I was moving into over protective parent mode when we walked in there. William has been poked SO many times and his veins are hard to get. He has bruises on the inside of each arm and ankle from all of the blood draws and attempts. Somehow I held my tongue and they got it on the first try. I was so happy I could have hugged them both!

They sent off some labs for some genetic testing today and got a CBC (Complete Blood Count) to check his levels. His Neutrophil level was 700 today. That is half of what it was yesterday, but they said that it is fine that it dropped since he did not get a dose of GCSF (Drug that raises Neutrphils). They thought they might want to start him back on the GCSF but decided to wait. If they give it to him and his levels get raised too high, then he can get sick from having too high of a white blood cell count.

We will take him in to see his Pediatrician on Wednesday and they will check all of these things again. We also made an appt. to meet with the Hematologist on Friday to learn more about some of the results.

The Doctor and Nurse that took care of us today were GREAT! I am really glad we went in and were reassured that things are ok. William is definitely NOT better yet, but we made it through our first day home together. I’m exhausted from wrestling a little boy who wants to move and play, so that tells me that he’s doing ok!

We hope to have all 3 of us back at daycare and work tomorrow. We’ll see what my 20 other kids have been up to…

Have a great evening!
